About Alex
Dr. Alex Hinton is the Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University, and the UNESCO Chair in Genocide Prevention.
Hinton is also an award-winning author or editor of seventeen books, including Perpetrators: Encountering Humanity’s Dark Side, It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US and Anthropological Witness: Lessons from the Khmer Rouge Tribunal which centers on his 2016 experience testifying as an expert witness at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Cambodia.

In recognition of his work on genocide, the American Anthropological Association selected Hinton as the recipient of the 2009 Robert B. Textor and Family Prize for Excellence in Anticipatory Anthropology. He was also awarded the association’s 2022 Anthropology in the Media Award.

Hinton is a past President of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, a Member/Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and co-convener of the Global Consortium on Bigotry and Hate.
Most recently, Hinton received a 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Network of Genocide Scholars and a 2024-2025 H. F. Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Award.
A public anthropologist, Hinton regularly appears in the media and has been invited to speak on six continents across the globe.
